Our opinion
It's now easy enough to find your way around Samsung's top-of-the-range models (with the exception of the folding models, which are in a class of their own), and this Galaxy S24 Ultra sets the tone: it's all about performance, power and functionality.
The design of this smartphone hardly varies from the previous iteration, with equally generous dimensions and weight that make it hard to forget, and to use for small hands too, just as you have to deal with sharp edges. The choice of titanium as the main material hasn't made it any lighter, but its strength and elegance benefit from it, even if the glass coating on the back tends to retain fingerprints. As for the rest, there's nothing to complain about in terms of finish, connections are all state-of-the-art, and the presence of the stylus (as on all Samsung Ultra models) is an undeniable plus. Waterproofing is also a must, for impeccable features.
Top-of-the-range means a gigantic screen, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra is no exception, with a diagonal of 6.8 inches. For such a size, you need a good resolution, and the 1440 by 3120 pixels here guarantee a fine display. With a refresh rate ranging from 1 to 120Hz, fluidity is also guaranteed. But it's the brightness that really impresses, as it's always impeccable and serves the readability of the slab, which is also very insensitive to reflections. And finally, after a quick look at the settings and opting for the natural mode, there's nothing to complain about in terms of color rendering, which is faithful and justly rendered.
In terms of power, this Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra lives up to its name. The Korean brand has opted for the very latest generation processor, in an ultra-optimized version. It responds quickly and perfectly to all demands, and its fluidity is unaffected by the most demanding games.
Samsung has very strong ambitions in terms of photography. The main wide-angle sensor boasts 200 million pixels, initially combined into 12 million-pixel images. There's nothing wrong with the rendering, which is extremely detailed, with a very pronounced sharpness and a completely homogeneous exposure, and the S24 Ultra ranks among the best for photography in good lighting conditions. Darkness does little to diminish the quality of shots, which are as detailed as ever and barely affected by electronic noise.
With the second module, it's the ultra-wide-angle lens that's up for grabs, and once again the smartphone delivers excellent results: little distortion, good scene homogeneity and just a little too vivid color, but nothing to be ashamed of. Even in poor lighting conditions, there's no great loss in rendering quality. Finally, there are two zoom modules. The first, x3, comes through with flying colors: there's plenty of detail and sharpness, but this is especially true in bright surroundings, as darkness greatly affects rendering. The second is higher - x5 magnification - and manages to deliver beautiful, well-accentuated shots that don't deteriorate too much after dark.
As with the Galaxy S23 Ultra, the S24 Ultra benefits from a fine battery to offer a fairly long autonomy, allowing you to go a day without thinking about recharging. Recharging, however, still takes a long time, as Samsung has still not seen fit to enable fast recharging.
