Our opinion
If the Google Pixels are very good smartphones in terms of balance and value for money, every manufacturer has to offer a model with superior capabilities and power, and that's why Google is offering a Pro version of its flagship, the Pixel 8.
Design-wise, we're sticking to the usual Pixel lines, with the strip at the back housing the photo sensors. Like the Pixel 7 Pro before it, this is a generous, heavy smartphone with imposing dimensions. The screen is perfectly flat and the edges rounded, for a smooth, satisfying grip, with a rear panel that's pleasant to the touch yet won't pick up fingerprints, a very good point for the most maniacal (but not only). Connectivity is, of course, comprehensive, and the presence of Wifi 7 is a guarantee of longevity, given that this is a very recent standard.
The screen of this Google Pixel 8 Pro is rather large, with a diagonal of 6.7 inches and a definition to match, 1344 by 2992 pixels, for a most pleasing display finesse. The refresh rate can go up to 120 Hz for a fluidity that goes hand in hand with the rest of the qualities of this slab, which is not lacking in them. Brightness is just about perfect, even if the smartphone can sometimes suffer from pronounced reflections in bright light. Screen calibration is very good, and reproduces faithful colors, even if some smartphones in the same range do a little better.
Google uses a new processor for this Pixel 8 Pro. It delivers excellent performance, with real multitasking ability, enabling use without any slowdowns. The graphics section is top-notch, allowing you to enjoy games with maximum detail, and always a consistently fluid display, even if the smartphone can have a tendency to rise in temperature.
The Pixel 8 Pro features three photo sensors, confirming Google's excellence in this field. The main module boasts 50 million pixels, a mode that produces shots with a wealth of detail when the light is right. In classic mode, images are taken with 12.5 million pixels, and the rendering is very good, with a high level of detail, as well as well-rendered contrasts and textures.
It's in dimly lit environments that the Pixel 8 Pro stands out, maintaining the quality of its shots and details in particular. The ultra-wide-angle module is particularly impressive, with its 48 million pixels and the same luxury of detail and impeccable quality throughout the scene. Even in darkness, the quality of the shot is not greatly affected. The third module, a telephoto lens with 5x magnification, also delivers fine results, with a clean rendering, especially in the center of the image, but don't expect too much from it: darkness takes its toll. The portrait mode is a great success, and the selfies produced by the front-facing sensor are not lacking in quality either, with faces always well outlined. Video capture is right up there with the norm, with beautiful rendering, supposedly made even better with the boost video mode, which does however require you to share your videos in the Google cloud.
For a high-end smartphone, the battery life of this Google Pixel 8 Pro is quite disappointing, falling short of what you'd expect from such a model. Fast recharging, with the right charger, makes up for this somewhat.
