Our opinion
With its smartphones, Samsung has been able to validate the viability and interest of smartphones that are both foldable and high-performance. The Galaxy ZFlip, the most compact of the Korean manufacturer's range, is now in its fourth iteration, which takes things a little further.
It's hard to tell the difference at first glance, however, because the design is so similar. It is in the details that we see the evolutions, with matte finishes for the colored parts and metallic edges, and overall we just notice a slight decrease in some dimensions. Unfortunately, the small screen on the front is not fully exploited by Samsung and if some actions are possible, we can't change the title on Spotify or some other actions that don't necessarily require a large diagonal. This remains a small detail for this phone with a small footprint and whose handling remains pleasant and easy, with nice guarantees of solidity in passing. Samsung has added a short immersion resistance to the Z Flip 4, but dust and small particles in general are not recommended for this smartphone.
For the screen, Samsung has not changed the formula with a generous diagonal (6.7 inches) and a generous resolution (2640 by 1080 pixels) and a very high refresh rate (120 Hz). With the natural mode to be selected in the settings, there is nothing to complain about on the rendering of colors or their temperature. Among the very good points, we must add the almost total absence of reflections on this slab, which adapts equally well to dark and bright environments.
The Galaxy ZFlip 4 does not stand out in gaming: its processor shows some limits to compete with the most powerful models, with drops in performance due to the heat of the device, which is regulated, sacrificing fluidity. A use other than demanding games will not cause any notable concern.
The photo configuration has hardly changed, with two sensors with 12 million pixels. The main sensor, which takes most of the shots and is wide-angle, does very well in a daytime environment. If the shots are certainly in a small deficit of contrast, the colorimetry is good and the scene is very faithful. When the night comes, the contrast again affects the rendering but it is still very acceptable and rather realistic, a good point. The ultra wide-angle sensor also does a good job and we enjoy a good level of detail, but with the same drawback on the contrast as for the main sensor. On the other hand, as always or almost always with this kind of lens, the shots in a dark environment are to forget. For selfies, if there is a sensor on the front, it is hardly efficient and using the ZFlip 4 closed and its two main sensors will be much more judicious, relying on the small screen to help! The portrait mode is correct without more, but the video capture is once again in very good conditions.
The hope of a better autonomy than the Galaxy ZFlip 3 was possible, with this more generous battery, but in fact, this 4th version does even less well, and not only the smartphone does not show much endurance, but it is also long to charge!
