Our opinion
It's always a small event when every year Samsung announces its top-of-the-range smartphone, which often leaves its mark on the market. It also serves as the basis for the Ultra and Plus models, but this Galaxy S23 already shows great promise.
There's little change in the design of this S23, which is very similar in size to its predecessor, but weighs the same. The reduced size and well-placed keys make for a very pleasant grip, and the fact that it remains waterproof and dustproof, as evidenced by IP68 certification, is another plus point. The pastel-colored rear panel is a real eye-catcher, and the overall look is sleek and flattering. Connectivity is particularly comprehensive.
The screen diagonal stops at 6.1 inches, which is more than enough to offer a moderate phone footprint, but above all Samsung has done well to offer quality in line with its high standards. Full HD+ resolution (2340 by 1080 pixels) enables HDR10+ technology and, more generally, good display finesse. The refresh rate reaches a maximum of 120 Hz for maximum fluidity, and brightness can adapt to all types of surrounding light, despite a strong propensity to suffer from pronounced reflections in bright sunlight. As for color fidelity, it's up to you to choose the natural mode in the settings.
Although Samsung's operating system has a tendency to spread out and take up too much memory space, this doesn't detract from the Galaxy S23's performance, which moves from one use to another without showing any signs of difficulty. As for gaming, there's nothing to complain about here either, as you can enjoy the latest games with constant fluidity and plenty of detail.
For the photo section, there are three sensors, one main and two dedicated, respectively to ultra-wide-angle and telephoto. The first sensor goes up by pixel combination to 50 million pixels, but by default is "content" with 12.5 million, for a decent rendering that suffers from overexposure (which can be managed manually) and a rendering that lacks a little naturalness, as photos are very bright, with, on the plus side, a great luxury of detail. In the dark, there's little or nothing to complain about, as Samsung has taken great care with the S23. The 50-megapixel mode limits the worry of overexposure and proves excellent, even if it is of little interest in a dark environment. The second sensor also suffers from overexposure in the ultra-wide-angle range, but the Korean brand has managed to improve the sensor's performance in difficult lighting conditions. The third sensor, with its x3 zoom, suffers from the same problem of overexposure, but this is still quite acceptable. On the plus side, the portrait mode is very reliable, the front-facing sensor ensures superb selfies in almost all conditions, and the video capture system offers a wide range of options for doing whatever you want, and always in good conditions, including an 8k mode and high-performance stabilization.
In terms of autonomy, the battery is a little more generous, but a day or even a day and a half of use is just about the maximum. As for recharging, with the charger recommended (but not supplied) by Samsung, it takes just over an hour for a full charge, which doesn't make it the fastest.
