Our opinion
Samsung's flagship smartphone is still the S range, but the Korean firm has not forgotten that many users don't want to spend a lot of money on a phone, and that the mid-range has its fans. The Galaxy A55 doesn't skimp on promises, but remains a little more affordable in terms of price.
The design of this Galaxy A55 shows little change from the previous version, the A54. However, we can see a very high level of finish, with beautiful materials and pleasant ergonomics, and a responsive fingerprint reader under the screen. However, glass and aluminum don't play well with the smartphone's weight, which clearly exceeds 200 grams on the scales, and its somewhat prominent dimensions. Although not waterproof, the Galaxy A55 has IP67 certification against dust and water splashes: otherwise, the smartphone's connectivity is complete, with a micro-SD port and support for eSIM cards.
With a 6.6-inch panel, this Galaxy A55 offers a large display surface, with good resolution (1080 by 2340 pixels) and a refresh rate that can go up to 120 Hz for maximum fluidity. Well-defined, the screen also offers particularly accurate color rendering, with a short trip to the settings to opt for the natural mode. Brightness is good enough for almost any situation, despite some glare in bright sunlight. Afterglow is otherwise imperceptible, and contrast is virtually infinite.
In terms of performance, the Samsung A55 features a new processor, which proves to be very good for classic use, between social networking and web surfing, with no worries about slowdowns. When it comes to games, the latest ones can run in decent conditions, but you'll sometimes have to sacrifice a few details for maximum fluidity.
For photography, Samsung has opted for three sensors, but only the main module and the ultra-wide-angle module are worth the effort, the third (macro) being rather anecdotal. The main sensor performs well in the right conditions, with a little noise and a slight lack of contrast, but the details are there for a flattering final result. In dark or nocturnal environments, the processing does its job and the shots remain usable without much concern. If this sensor produces photos with 12.5 million pixels, it is possible to exploit it to the full with 50 million pixels, but apart from cropping, the gain is not very noticeable. The ultra-wide-angle module struggles more, with concerns about the edges of the image and, more generally, a lack of sharpness. As for the rest, the front-facing sensor produces fine selfies: as for portrait mode, just beware of its slightly too pronounced effects. Video capture goes up to 4K resolution, with decent fluidity.
When it comes to autonomy, Samsung has hit the nail on the head, equipping this Galaxy A55 with a fine battery that will last a day and a half without ever having to worry about battery levels. The weak point lies rather in recharging, which unfortunately takes longer than an hour. A charger is not supplied.
