Our opinion
There is not only for the high-end at Samsung, and this Galaxy A42 is intended to represent the entry-level of the Korean form for 5G. This does not mean that the brand has skimped on the quality of this smartphone, which displays some nice qualities.
In terms of design, this smartphone surprises a little with finishes a little below what Samsung offers on the high end and the colors, like a cameo of gray, are a little surprising. On the front, we can see that the bottom edge is a bit prominent, which does not give a very premium impression. On the other hand, there is everything that is needed in terms of connectivity, and we are pleased to note the presence of a mini-jack port, which will allow you to reuse your old pair of headphones: too bad that its stereo rendering is very average. The speaker is just a little better.
The 6.6-inch diagonal screen does not have a very high resolution, with 1600 by 720 pixels, which is not Full HD but is sufficient most of the time, except for text. On the other hand, the color rendering is quite faithful, with very well managed temperatures. The brightness is not very strong but is sufficient for most uses with few reflections. The infinite contrast brings a final positive note to the poster of this Samsung Galaxy A42.
In terms of power, this smartphone has nothing to be ashamed of and performs very well. Multitasking is not too much of a problem and it will accept application changes with little or no latency. Even in a playful use, this Galaxy A42 ensures quite correct performances.
4 photo sensors are on board, which are complementary. The main one proudly displays 48 million pixels, but its rendering is not exceptional. There is indeed something to say about cold colors and exposure, but the good points are undeniably the sharpness and contrast. At night, unfortunately, the noise and smoothing have their effect and significantly degrade the rendering. The ultra wide-angle module has eight million pixels, but does not offer a very good rendering, the fault of the smoothing still too marked, to the detriment of details, and in the dark it is the colors that are degraded. The two other lenses allow to manage the macro character and the depth of field. The portraits lack a little precision on the details and the clipping, which stumbles on the hair for example. The selfies are however of good quality, even when the conditions are a little complicated. Same good quality on the video, for which it will still be necessary to show stability for an optimal result.
The very generous battery allows a great autonomy to the Galaxy A42, which can hold without too much effort two days of use, which makes it one of the best smartphones of the brand in the field.
