Our opinion
In just a few years and with increasingly well-balanced phones that are also very interesting in terms of photography, Google has managed to carve out a place for itself among the best smartphone manufacturers. Once again, the Pixel 8 has a lot to offer.
The design of this new version has changed little, but the weight has been reduced a little, the lines are a little more rounded, but this remains subtle, and the Google Pixel 8 will be well suited to people with small hands, thanks also to its good overall ergonomics. While it's very well finished with resistant glass, this would have benefited from a more recent version, as on the Pro version. Connectivity is comprehensive, and the IP68 waterproof certification is a good point.
The screen of this Pixel 8 has a diagonal of 6.1 inches, with a comfortable resolution of 2400 by 1080 pixels. Good points include the switch to a 120Hz refresh rate for optimum fluidity, and a brightness that copes with almost any situation. Slab calibration is excellent, once you've taken a short tour of the settings and selected the natural mode, for flawless color rendering.
The combination of a new processor and a thrifty operating system delivers excellent performance in everyday use, and all applications launch without a hitch. The gaming experience is also very satisfying, with advanced technologies that don't pose any fluidity concerns.
For photography, Google has chosen to use two complementary sensors. The first has 50 million pixels, but delivers 12.5 million-pixel images when combined. There's nothing wrong with the images it produces, even if there is a slight lack of detail compared with the strong competition from smartphones in the same sector, but this remains marginal. Google's software processing of the shot is well mastered, but above all it works miracles when light is scarce, with a fine ability to retain detail. The ultra-wide-angle module is a nice surprise and a total success, with accurate, flattering detail and color, and although this result deteriorates in the dark, it remains usable. There's nothing to complain about when it comes to selfies, with the front-facing sensor fulfilling its role brilliantly, while the portrait mode is impressively relevant and precise for rendering faces as well as hair, for example. Video capture, which is beautifully crafted, benefits above all from effective optical stabilization.
While the battery on this Google Pixel 8 is slightly more generous, autonomy doesn't benefit at all and the smartphone is very clearly disappointing in this aspect, even if the - slightly - faster charging with the right charger is welcome.
