Our opinion
Google has managed to find its place as a smartphone manufacturer with its Pixel range, and in this one the "A" models are the entry level but are still appreciated by the general public, especially thanks to their highly developed photo capabilities.
In terms of design, Google is largely inspired by the Google Pixel 6, with some concessions in terms of materials, such as glass for the rear coating replaced by a quality plastic, a slightly less protection for the screen. Nothing very notable, but positive point, it is a little less large and less heavy, the screen occupies the same percentage of the front, with reduced edges. If the general ergonomics are correct, with the fingerprint reader under the screen (it could be more responsive), the physical button for on/off could have been better placed. If you have to do without a micro-SD or Jack port, the connections are there, the compatibility with eSIM is present, and very good point, the waterproofness is there, with an IP67 certification, too often missing in this price range.
The screen of this Pixel 6a is well made. Its definition, 1080 by 2400 pixels, already ensures a very fine display which has a positive influence on comfort, especially when reading. If a refresh rate of 90 or 120 Hz is missing, which would bring a real extra fluidity, the rest of the characteristics of the panel is satisfactory. The brightness is sufficient to counterbalance the reflections and to offer a reading without discomfort in the dark, the contrast is infinite and with a small passage in the adjustments, the colors are displayed in an almost optimal way.
As usual, the Pixel range is expected on the photo part, and this model 6a remains faithful to the tradition of excellence established by Google. With a more classic and modest photo configuration than the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, this smartphone does very well. There is virtually nothing to criticize the rendering of the main sensor when the light conditions are good, with a very nice rendering, sharpness, and the almost total absence of any digital noise. The quality of the images when the light of the scene comes to miss is always more than honourable, and one preserves many details while avoiding the excessive smoothing. For the ultra wide-angle module, good light conditions allow to benefit from very qualitative photos, except for a little smoothing and some artifacts on the edges. Even darkness does not make the images unreadable. The portrait mode is very effective, and the selfie sensor, although it could have used a few more pixels, is generally good. The video capture benefits from a well-made optical stabilization.
The autonomy of this Google Pixel 6a does not suffer too much from its modest battery, and it is quite possible to use it for more than a day without fear of failure. To recharge it, however, you'll need a charger and even with a model with a good capacity, recharging takes a little too long.
