Our opinion
As is now customary, Google is now offering its top-of-the-line smartphone in a very large format version to satisfy those who do everything with their smartphone and therefore benefit from a large display surface. This Google Pixel 4 XL is indeed very generous in its forms.
The design in appearance shows some progress menus from Google, with edges better exploited (top) and reduced (bottom), even if this is not revolutionary. The glass back panel is quite attractive because it's uncluttered, and there's no trace of a fingerprint reader. Everything is done through facial recognition, which is also very reliable, even when the user's eyes are closed, which can raise security issues. If the ergonomics are well thought out, with physical keys that fall well under the fingers, one cannot deny the dimensions and weight of the smartphone. In terms of regrets, the lack of a micro-SD card port is a bit of a detriment, but waterproofing is a good point.
The screen of this Google Pixel 4 XL is a splendid success. With its large diagonal of 6.3 inches, and a resolution of 1440 by 3040 pixels is there for a perfect display comfort even over a long period of time. The contrast is infinite, so the black and white are perfectly marked, and the colours are perfectly rendered with a realistic temperature and imperceptible chromatic aberrations. Finally, few reflections and a luminosity that is ideal in all circumstances end up making this tile a magnificent success.
Once again, it has to be done without a jack port, but also without an adapter for the USB-C port, which looks like small savings to the detriment of the buyer. On the other hand, the speakers present are very successful and provide a correct sound.
Power is not at all a concern for this Google Pixel 4 XL, which handles multitasking perfectly, never or almost never slowing down, also showing excellent gaming performance. Strangely, some smartphones do better but it's really at the limit of what you can hear and even the latest games run in excellent conditions. At night, or just in the dark, there's no problem for the photo sensor, which provides shots with great detail but also a very nice color balance. The telephoto lens module is a little more surprising, as the Pixel 3 was doing quite well without it. The rendering of this sensor is nothing to be ashamed of, far from it, but there's a certain lack of warmth in the rendering, which also has its limits in the dark, but there again it's rather moderate and well managed by the Google Pixel 4 XL. With a very successful portrait mode, once again able to capture the smallest details, the smartphone only has limits in its video mode, which is below what the competition offers in video capture with a more limited 4K mode, and the photo module for selfies isn't at its best either, but it manages face exposure very well.
It goes without saying that this Google Pixel 4 XL is expected when it comes to photography, as the brand has largely shown that the overbidding of sensors does not necessarily make a better photo game. There is a main sensor and a telephoto lens, for an absolutely perfect rendering in full light, with a realistic and homogeneous rendering.
