Our opinion
Google has signed an excellent high-end deal with the Pixel 3, which has finally confirmed the good performance of the American giant's smartphones. With the 3a, it is a more economical version that it presents, in order to seduce the general public more widely.
The design of the Pixel 3 was not the most successful, and this Pixel 3a does not appeal either. It has a front facade with rather unsightly edges, which make it look bigger than it is. In addition, plastic is predominant, which takes away the premium aspect. Moreover, the front does not even have a fingerprint reader, which is located at the back. If the USB-c port is there, as well as the jack plug, there is no waterproofing certification, and the ergonomics can be improved.
With 5.6 inches diagonal, the screen is not huge, but it has very good qualities. With a beautiful resolution of 2220 by 1080 pixels, the display is fine, and since the contrast is infinite and the brightness adapted to all environments, the slab is one of the good successes. Another very good point, the colour rendering is impeccable, almost ideal in the temperature of the colours.
The presence of a mini-jack port is always a good surprise, and even if the power is a little low, the rest of its features are good with little distortion and a correct stereo image. The two speakers do a great job together as long as the volume remains reasonable.
If this Google Pixel 3a is not a real power monster, what it offers is more than enough for a smooth user experience, which will just be shaken by a few applications that would be greedy. In particular, the most recent games will require some concessions, but nothing too notable.
In the photo, Google had announced results as flattering as the Pixel 3, an excellent photophone, but which benefited from a processor dedicated to processing shots, here absent. However, the Pixel 3a produces excellent shots. In bright light, the 12 million pixel stabilized sensor does just fine, with images that are very rich in detail, balanced and natural. The same goes for difficult lighting conditions, which are perfectly managed for photos that keep a very good balance between smoothing and noise for scenes that are always visible. The night mode is amazingly beautiful, allowing high quality on-the-fly photos, even if the colors always seem a little bit the same. The portrait mode is also very successful, like the front camera, which produces well-functioning selfies. Finally, the part dedicated to video capture does not disappoint either, for sequences captured without a hitch.
The autonomy of this Pixel 3a is very good, with almost two days of use without any real concession, but some models still do a little better. A slightly more generous battery would probably have been possible and would have had a very positive effect on the endurance of this smartphone.
