Our opinion
Samsung was a pioneer in foldable smartphones, notably with the Fold, which folds vertically, but the competition was quick to respond and offer attractive alternatives. Full of promise, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has many assets to help restore the Korean brand's reputation.
The manufacturer's first coup was to drastically reduce the thickness of the folded smartphone, as the Z Fold 7 is less than 9 mm thick when closed, and when opened, it is an extremely slim device. Despite its generous dimensions when folded, which are similar to those of other smartphones in its category, the weight of the Z Fold 7 has not increased and is even significantly lower than the previous version. Samsung has chosen premium materials for this device and solid protection for the screens, which reassures users about its durability, particularly at the hinge. Be careful, though: when laid flat, the device is inevitably unbalanced due to the camera lenses, the downside of such thinness. In terms of built-in technology, everything is there, or almost everything, and the IP48 rating protects against heavy dust and splashes.
Samsung remains true to its quality standards with the screens of this Z Fold 7. The unfolded internal screen, with its 8-inch diagonal, is impressive: very bright, with little glare and faithful color rendering, it is very pleasant to use. It also has excellent definition (2184 x 1968 pixels) and an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120 Hz for total fluidity. The external screen also has some great features: a comfortable resolution (2520 x 1080 pixels), perfect brightness in all circumstances, despite a slight tendency to reflect light, and accurate color rendering.
There are no issues in terms of power for everyday uses such as browsing the internet or social media, with switching between apps always fast and smooth. When gaming, the device does heat up a little, which is not surprising given the slimness of the Z Flip 7, but this remains reasonable, and you can enjoy perfectly acceptable fluidity, even if this is not the smartphone's strong point.
For photography, Samsung has equipped the Galaxy Z Fold 7 with three photo sensors so that it is ready for any situation. The first, dedicated to wide-angle photos, is the most powerful with 200 million pixels, but by default produces 12.5-megapixel shots by combining them. Sharpness, detail, and overall quality are all there for a very pleasing result, which only deteriorates moderately when light is lacking, as the shots are expertly processed by the smartphone. The 200-megapixel mode will only be useful for those who like to crop their photos (and beware of file sizes!). The ultra-wide-angle module, on the other hand, is much less convincing, with photos that lack naturalness and are not necessarily well defined, and this deteriorates when the environment is dark. Finally, the 3x telephoto lens is a pleasant surprise, with a fairly soft, pleasing rendering, and a reasonable drop in quality in difficult lighting conditions.
For selfies, there are inevitably several ways to go about it, given the nature of the smartphone, with the main modules naturally being the most suitable, especially with the return to the internal screen. Otherwise, there are modules that are perfectly suited to more traditional shots, with successful results and a portrait mode that performs well. Video capture is excellent, with a wide range of options and high quality.
The battery life does not suffer from the extreme thinness of this Galaxy Z Flip 7, which can easily provide around 20 hours of use before needing to be recharged. Unfortunately, Samsung has still not improved in this area, and it takes an hour and a half to fully recharge the battery!
