Our opinion
It's been several years now since Samsung established its range of folding smartphones, the Z Fold having a most audacious design in its early days, but which the Korean brand has further perfected on this fifth model.
It's in its design that the first evolution can be quickly spotted, namely the teardrop-shaped hinge, which solves one of the biggest problems of previous models, namely the vulnerability to dust that tended to creep into this fold. The Z Fold 5 can now be closed completely, and its overall dimensions are slightly reduced. Its aluminum structure keeps weight under control, but it remains a heavy, imposing smartphone. It's possible to use the brand's S Pen style, to be purchased separately, but there's no place to store it, except on a shell specially sold by Samsung, which comes at a cost.
The external panel of this Galaxy Z Fold 5 still boasts the same 6.2-inch diagonal, with the same extremely elongated format, which can be both pleasing and displeasing. The adaptive refresh rate provides real comfort of use, and as always with Samsung, we also benefit from good brightness, whatever the environment in which we find ourselves. With a quick trip through the settings, the natural color rendering mode proves both faithful and warm. The internal panel, obtained when the device is unfolded, displays more or less the same excellent characteristics on a 7.6-inch diagonal.
The Galaxy Z Fold 5's power is up to the task, and it's not everyday use that's likely to put it to the test, as fluidity is always the order of the day. Games don't suffer from any slowdown either, and the whole experience is always fluid and with maximum detail.
In terms of photography, the Z Fold 5 is very similar, if not identical, to the Galaxy S23, with its 50-megapixel sensor, ultra-wide-angle module and telephoto lens. The main module performs well in daylight conditions, even if the rendering lacks a little sharpness. On the other hand, the Korean manufacturer manages lower light levels well, maintaining a legible scene with just the right amount of detail. The ultra-wide-angle module doesn't work miracles, but its rendering is within the norm, and doesn't suffer from overly visible artifacts. The telephoto lens is highly effective, since it is limited to a 3x magnification, which is enough to avoid the need for gimmicks, as the competition too often does. For selfies, we'd advise against using the "internal" camera, which has a ceiling of 4 million pixels, in favor of the 10-megapixel front module, which is correct even if it has a tendency to smooth out. Portrait mode, meanwhile, is a real success, with routing that's always well executed. Video capture is top-notch, with excellent functionality and flawless rendering.
Unfortunately, Samsung has made little progress on the battery front, and the two large screens tend to drain the battery much faster than on a "classic" phone. It's a pity that fast recharging is not available to counterbalance this rather disappointing picture.
