Our opinion
Samsung persists and signs with a new device between the smartphone very large format and the book or not far. The Z Fold 3 is heavy, almost disproportionate, but it also has qualities that go with its size, or at least that's the positioning that the Korean firm wants to give it.
Big and heavy, this smartphone does not go unnoticed and is not easily forgotten. It is obviously perfectly finished, winning the waterproofing in the process, but you will still have to be careful about dust on the hinges. In closed mode, the slab seems very narrow, but when it is opened, there is a nice space and we are not very far from a mini tablet. The general ergonomics are well done and logical, even if it will take some time to adapt to this Z Fold3. The hinge allows you to use it in "tent" mode to put the device down and watch a video for example.
The large screen measures 7.6 inches diagonally, which is impressive but still retains the quality to which Samsung has accustomed its followers. It looks more solid, and remains very richly defined (1768 by 2208 pixels) with a 120 Hz refresh rate. It has just a less faithful rendering than normal for Samsung but a small passage in the settings will limit the breakage and will benefit from well rendered colors. The good surprises are the camera embedded under the slab, which produces its little effect when you take in hand the Z Fold 3 unfolded, and the compatibility with the stylus is a significant plus. On the other hand, in terms of software, the display of applications is not always optimal on the screen once opened, given its non-standard format. The more "classic" screen that is used when the phone is closed measures 6.2 inches diagonally, it is excellent as always with Samsung, with a nice definition (2268 by 832 pixels), very faithful in its color rendering with a little trick in the settings and readable in all circumstances. Its refresh rate goes up to 120 Hz for an optimal comfort.
If, as always, there is no mini-jack port, and Bluetooth or USB-c is essential to connect a headset, the speakers are well made. Be careful when you have the smartphone in your hand not to obstruct them!
The power is there with a very generous RAM (12 GB) that makes multitasking very efficient and always fluid, and the same goes for games. Games are always fluid, even with a great deal of detail, making the Z Fold3 a very nice gaming device.
As on the Z Fold 2, it is a configuration with three photo sensors that we find here. The main one, with its 12 million pixels, does an honest job: you have to like the bright colors, not to say unrealistic, but there is plenty of detail, even in the dark. There is also an ultra wide-angle sensor, which does well in the center of the image, but then it deteriorates significantly on the edges of the screen as often. And the good surprise is that the telephoto lens benefits from the contrast a little too accentuated to ultimately retain details. For selfies, there is a choice, such as using the sensor under the foldable screen, but it is mediocre. On the classic screen, there is a good sensor, but the must is to deploy the screen and use the single screen as a monitor and benefit from the main photo sensor!
The battery of this Z Fold 3 is not huge and this is reflected in the autonomy, but it remains correct given the type of device that is this smartphone. The charge on the other hand would have benefited from being faster, and the missing charger remains a bit annoying.
