Our opinion
At the top end of Samsung's range, the Z Flip foldable phones, which inevitably bring to mind old flip phones, have carved out a niche for themselves with a style that goes hand in hand with high-end features. However, this seventh version is positioned in an increasingly competitive sector.
For this new iteration, Samsung has focused on comfort, reducing the thickness of the device thanks to the use of aluminum, and on weight, which is now more manageable: it may not seem like much, but in everyday use it proves to be very appreciable. As always, there are two screens: the main one when the smartphone is unfolded, and the one used when the device is closed, both with very narrow bezels. The overall finish is excellent, with connectivity that supports the latest standards. The only downside (but logical, given the central hinge) is the lack of waterproofing, with an IP48 rating: be careful with water and dust.
The main screen (when unfolded) of the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is generous, with a 6.9-inch diagonal, a beautiful resolution (2520 x 1080 pixels) and a virtually imperceptible crease. Color accuracy is spot on without the need for adjustments: it's very faithful and therefore pleasing to the eye. The brightness is also a success, making this screen readable in all circumstances, even in direct sunlight, thanks to minimal glare. Finally, the adaptive refresh rate can go up to 120 Hz for perfect fluidity.
The external screen (when the phone is folded) is also very well made, with very satisfactory technical specifications. It's a shame that Samsung has made customization and optimal use a little complicated, but nothing insurmountable.
In terms of performance, the Z Flip 7 has a brand new processor, which, coupled with generous RAM, allows you to run the most common apps without any problems and switch between them seamlessly. When it comes to gaming, while performance is also good, it does decrease slightly during long gaming sessions, and the smartphone can also get quite warm.
The same main configuration with two sensors is found for the camera, with the wide-angle module going up to 50 megapixels. In normal use, 12.5-megapixel photos are captured, with sharpness and vivid colors, but there is still some digital noise around the edges of the image. Be careful in the dark, as this greatly affects the rendering, which becomes less readable and pleasant. The 50-megapixel mode doesn't really offer the user much, except for larger files. The ultra-wide-angle sensor, with its 12 megapixels, performs well in good light, despite some distortion at the edges and a slight lack of overall precision. In a dark environment, Samsung's decision to opt for strong smoothing does not pay off at all.
For selfies, and given the specific nature of the Galaxy Z Flip 7, it's much better to use the main lens with the small screen display, in order to take advantage of a good lens, while the front module is just adequate (with only 10 million pixels). The portrait mode is generally a success, with smooth results. Finally, video capture is very good, both in terms of fluidity and definition, with the added bonus of being able to use the different camera modules simultaneously.
Samsung has still not made the leap to fast charging on the Z Flip 7, and it takes over an hour to fully charge, which is not very fast for a smartphone in this price range.
