Our opinion
With its Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung has found its place among folding smartphones, which, by closing in on themselves, have a little retro touch. However, this sixth iteration does not skimp on features, and could well find its place in the firm's top range.
The design of version 6 of the Z Flip has changed little. We can only observe that the edges of the smartphone are thinner, matte, and this can be felt with pleasure when held in the hand - we'll have to take into account the location of the fingerprint reader in this area. The weight of this smartphone is as well contained as ever, and its dimensions remain unchanged, except that the central fold is even more discreet than before. As always with Samsung, the finish is beyond reproach, and the IP48 standard guarantees a little resistance to water splashes and dust. Connectivity is complete, with all the latest standards, except Wifi7, strangely not supported by this Galaxy Z Flip 6.
The Z Flip's screens confirm the great care Samsung takes with them, as always. The main screen, with its 6.7-inch diagonal, has an excellent resolution of 2640 by 1080 pixels, for remarkable comfort. The adaptive refresh rate ensures constant fluidity, and brightness is impressive. The real strength of this slab is its ability to adapt to all light environments, while perfectly blocking reflections. Last but not least, the natural display mode guarantees highly faithful color rendering, even if the Z Flip 5 did (just a little) better. The cover screen, when the smartphone is closed, is superbly crafted and has greatly improved, being highly legible and faithful in its rendering, making its limited usefulness almost frustrating.
The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is indeed powerful. Classic uses are handled perfectly, it's fluid, but you can feel when the phone is being called upon, as it tends to heat up. This is particularly noticeable in games, but it doesn't stop the device from delivering top performance and a smooth experience with no graphical concessions.
The photo configuration is simple, with two sensors (wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle) and no telephoto lens, but the main module is the same as on the Galaxy S24, with a maximum of 50 million pixels. This sensor, which immortalizes 12.5-megapixel shots by default, is as powerful as ever. There's a plethora of detail, textures are well rendered, and colorimetry is just a little lively. When the scene is less brightly lit, Samsung lets a little noise affect the image, but overall detail is still there. The 50 megapixel mode is especially useful for cropping, but also displays sharper details and even more intense colors. The ultra-wide-angle module tops out at 12 million pixels, and proves a little disappointing, with a little too much smoothing in the center and declining precision at the edges of the image. Darkness greatly affects the unflattering rendering. For selfies, it's much better to use the main module with the camera folded up than the somewhat limited internal sensor. Portrait mode is of high quality and precise in its processing. Video capture is of a good standard, and delivers smooth sequences.
As for autonomy, Samsung's lack of fast charging remains a mystery. Nevertheless, the Z Flip 6 is enduring and doesn't run out of power easily, even more so if the user relies on the more thrifty front display. On the other hand, when the smartphone heats up because of overuse, its autonomy logically decreases.
