Our opinion
Samsung doesn't intend to change an already well-established formula too much, and its foldable smartphone has already won over a large number of users. But this fifth model goes even further, and presents itself with a number of evolutions that should enable it to appeal to the widest possible audience.
The main evolution in terms of handling is a reduced thickness when closed, which is made possible by a hinge that folds away completely, with no apparent daylight. This effort by the Korean manufacturer does not come at the expense of IpX8 certification, which guarantees resistance to immersion in water. There's nothing wrong with the level of finish, the impression of solidity and the materials used, all of which are very well made, even if the finish tends to retain fingerprints, except for the matt versions. The external screen is much larger and more useful than before, as it displays more information. The main screen is still thin-edged, but the crease is still visible. The fingerprint reader is still in the same place, on the side. There's nothing to complain about in terms of connectivity, which is plentiful and up-to-date.
The screen of this Galaxy ZFlip 5 is similar to that of the previous model. With a diagonal of 6.7 inches (1080 by 2640 pixels) and a refresh rate that ranges from 1 to 120 Hz depending on the circumstances, the basic characteristics are very good. But it's brightness that Samsung has improved, making this smartphone usable in all circumstances, with few reflections even in bright sunlight. With the natural mode in the settings, colors are completely realistic and true to life. The external screen, which is used to manage the closed phone, is of good quality, with a diagonal of 720 by 748 pixels, which is quite sufficient. Beware, however, of reflections, which are very noticeable outdoors.
In terms of power, the ZFlip 5 responds well, combining a well-built processor with generous memory. The result is a very fluid user experience in all circumstances, even if there is a slight rise in temperature. This is all the more noticeable in playful moments, but does little to slow down the smartphone, which remains highly efficient and responsive.
The first, a wide-angle 12-megapixel sensor, is very similar to that found on the Galaxy S23. In terms of rendering, there's a slight overexposure, but a marked sharpness and warmth, even if colors are a little lacking in accuracy. When light is scarce, rendering is degraded but still acceptable with reasonable smoothing. The ultra-wide-angle module is much more disappointing, and soon finds itself struggling, with an overall disappointing rendering. Video capture is still very good, and the sensor for selfies is of good quality, even if the best way to proceed is to use the main sensors by folding the phone, with the screen on the front for monitoring.
Because of their constrained format, folding smartphones often suffer in terms of battery life, and this ZFlip 5 is no exception to the problem, so you'll have to be careful not to be in trouble at the end of the day. By using the external screen, which consumes less power for simple uses, you can gain a little in usage time.
