Our opinion
Like every year, Samsung offers an evolution of its flagship model, and this Galaxy S24 follows on from the S23, which met with a large audience, offering a rather satisfactory configuration. While no revolution is expected, a few new features could well highlight this new top-of-the-range model from the Korean manufacturer.
Surprisingly, with its 6.2-inch screen, the S24 is one of those smartphones that can be used with one hand without too much trouble. Its quality is fully in line with the brand's standards, with refresh rates ranging from 1 to 120 Hz, for optimum fluidity. The resolution of 1080 by 2340 pixels is quite sufficient, even if the Korean manufacturer has been more qualitative on other models in the range. Where this smartphone stands out is in the brightness of its slab, perfect for all environments. We can also highlight its excellent color rendering, very realistic when you opt for a "Natural" rendering in the settings, but purists will note that the colors are a tad cold.
In terms of power, the Galaxy S24 defends itself without a care, and copes with demands without ever or almost without slowing down, although the most demanding users may in fact saturate the RAM a little. In terms of gaming, fluidity is well and truly on the cards, but beware of the smartphone's slight propensity to heat up, which is noticeable and sometimes annoying.
For photography, the Korean manufacturer has opted for a configuration with three photo modules, as found on the S24+. The main, wide-angle module can go up to 50 megapixels, but produces basic 12-megapixel images, with fairly vivid colors, well-defined sharpness and well-managed exposure, albeit with a little electronic noise. Nothing too disturbing, but this defect persists when light is lacking, without making images unusable, far from it: rendering remains among the best. With 50 million pixels, cropping becomes easier and offers rich details, especially in bright scenes. The ultra-wide-angle module suffers no loss of rendering quality, with sharpness remaining unchanged and little distortion at the edges of images, with just a little noise. This little flaw returns logically enough in the dark, but we also regret a loss of color vibrancy. For the telephoto lens, Samsung decided that a x3 magnification was enough, and it's a winning bet, except in terms of detail, which is a little crushed in the photos. Portrait mode is excellent, and the front-facing selfie sensor does an excellent job of detecting faces. Video capture, which can go up to 8K mode, benefits fully from the presence of AI made in Samsung, which provides relevant editing effects.
While the Galaxy S24's battery has been increased slightly, it doesn't do much for battery life, which comes to an end after just one day's use, which is disappointing compared with the competition. The absence of really fast recharging, despite its presence on the S24 + and S24 Ultra, leaves us a little disappointed.
