Our opinion
The Samsung Galaxy FE range offers a less expensive, less powerful, but still well-balanced version of the Korean manufacturer's top-of-the-range models. The S23 FE has a lot going for it, at a reasonable price.
The design of this smartphone is very similar to the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+, with a screen size in between. However, it is a little thick around the edges and a little too heavy, but the grip is still good and pleasant. Although the materials used for this Galaxy S23 FE are a little less premium than the Korean manufacturer's top-of-the-range models, there's no doubt about the smartphone's solidity. There's nothing to complain about when it comes to connectivity, which is sufficient for all modern uses.
The screen is 6.4" diagonal, which is quite sufficient for comfortable reading, and the resolution of 2340 by 1080 pixels is sufficient for legible characters. The refresh rate, which ranges from 60 to 120Hz, ensures good fluidity. The brightness of this S23 FE's slab is sufficient for most environments, even if reflections appear in very bright surroundings. As always with Samsung, a quick trip to the settings is essential for accurate color rendition, as the Korean brand tends to opt for colors that are a little too bright by default.
This Galaxy S23 FE offers plenty of power for everyday use, with well-managed multitasking and fairly constant fluidity. It's in the gaming experience that this smartphone struggles, displaying difficulties in running games with maximum detail.
Samsung has opted for three camera modules to equip this Galaxy S23 FE. The main sensor, with its 50 million pixels, comes through with flying colors, even if the default mode produces images with 12.5 million pixels. In a bright environment, it produces images of very good quality, with a good level of detail despite imperfect sharpness and colorimetry. Even when light is more scarce, rendering remains correct and the loss of detail is very reasonable. The 50 megapixel mode is especially useful for those who want to crop without losing too much in terms of quality, but otherwise doesn't achieve much, especially in poor lighting conditions. The ultra-wide-angle sensor, on the other hand, is a minor disappointment, lacking a little homogeneity, even if the rendering is nothing to be ashamed of when compared to the competition. The telephoto lens is also within the norm and performs well, leaving a bit of sharpness here and a bit of noise there, but nothing surprising in this price range of smartphones.
The front-facing sensor is rather average, but compensates for a somewhat average rendering with a rather pronounced smoothing, even if this remains reasonable. Portrait mode does very well, with good face detection. Video capture is of good quality, and (with the main sensor) can be recorded in very high definition (8K) with real fluidity.
In terms of autonomy, the Galaxy S23 FE is rather disappointing, and the modest battery doesn't cope well with the most demanding applications, which quickly reduce the duration of use before recharging. Recharging takes some time, but remains reasonable.
