Our opinion
As it is now usual, Samsung signs an ultimate declination of its high-end family, with an "Ultra" model for the Galaxy S22, which promises very good performance in all areas.
There is a change on this new smartphone in terms of design, with a strong evocation of the Galaxy Note. The clean and elegant lines and the addition of a stylus are still in this direction, but the weight is not affected, even if the dimensions (width and thickness too) of this S22 Ultra are imposing and will necessarily be a bit restrictive for small hands. As for the finishing touches, they are irreproachable with very nice materials, which reassure us of the solidity of the whole. The connectivity of this top of the range Samsung does not reveal any surprise, and the fingerprint reader under the screen is of the same quality as the whole, very well made.
With a 6.8-inch diagonal slab, the Galaxy S22 Ultra sees things in a big way and the Korean brand has again signed a beautiful screen. There is an adaptive refresh rate for optimal comfort, a resolution that can climb to 1440 by 3088 pixels, infinite contrast and brightness always at the top. However, it will take a little trick in the settings to enjoy a color fidelity almost irreproachable.
This smartphone is once again penalized by the choice of processor by Samsung. If the S22 Ultra performs all the "classic" tasks of a smartphone without flinching, it is more difficult when it comes to recent video games, which is necessarily disappointing given the price category of the device!
For the photo, Samsung has largely equipped this smartphone in sensors, 4 to be precise. The main one and its 108 million pixels maximum fills its office very well, with the choice of bright colors in the rendering, with a very slight lack of detail and a touch of electronic noise. If it usually takes pictures with 12 million pixels, the mode in maximum quality (and therefore the 108 million pixels) allows to benefit from a luxury of details that is quite pleasant, rather for images in a daytime and still scene. The ultra wide-angle module suffers quite clearly from electronic noise, but the accentuation of colors seduces by bringing out the details, even if it means losing a little realism, and this choice is also found in a dark scene. For the x3 zoom, Samsung favored a more realistic rendering, a half-surprise that still lets some electronic noise seep in. In the dark, the shots are inevitably very affected, and the 10x zoom is reserved for very well exposed scenes. The portrait mode is a great success, the Galaxy S22 Ultra has no problem to detract faces from the background, and selfies are very good quality there too, thanks to a lens that lets you choose between wide angle or details. The Galaxy S22 Ultra is particularly well equipped for video with a plethora of welcome options, which will allow the most seasoned to enjoy pushing the smartphone to its limits.
For the battery, Samsung has done as on the Galaxy S21 Ultra with a good capacity that allows a correct autonomy of about a day and a half, and fast charging is now possible. Provided of course that you have a suitable charger, which is not sold with the smartphone.
