Our opinion
It follows on from the Galaxy S20 Ultra: the S21 Ultra is the new top-of-the-range product from the Korean manufacturer, and Samsung intends to make its mark with this smartphone, which also represents a real technological showcase.
Imposing, the smartphone is, but it is also a beautiful elegance, with its matte back, its very elongated format, and too bad if you have to do with a weight to say the least. The photo part and its lenses blend rather well into the whole. The screen is slightly curved, and hides the fingerprint reader, very fast and efficient. Waterproof, with good overall ergonomics, the Galaxy S21 Ultra exudes all the signs of a very high-end smartphone, and too bad if you have to deal with the impossibility of extending the storage capacity via a micro-SD card, but that's just a detail. On the surprise side, there is compatibility with the Note's styli, but that remains limited even if it is promising to bring the two ranges closer together.
The very large screen of this Galaxy S21 Ultra - 6.8 inches diagonal, or more than 17 cm - is in line with Samsung's quality standards, which is remarkable. The very high definition offered goes hand in hand with a very high refresh rate, synonymous with comfort in all circumstances. A small turn in the settings is necessary to draw the quintessence of this screen, which once this step is completed is very faithful in its rendering. The contrast is infinite, and the luminosity perfect in all circumstances, even if reflections in case of very strong sun are to be reported.
No possibility of taking back his old headphones for this latest smartphone, certainly, but headphones provided for the USB-C port, and speakers whose quality supports all uses or almost.
Nothing to complain about the power of this Galaxy S21 Ultra, which lives up to its name because it swallows all the tasks entrusted to it with great ease, switching from one application to another in a flash. Gamers won't need to make any concessions to keep things fluid.
For the photo, Samsung has seen big with 4 sensors in total. The main one is very richly supplied, with 108 megapixels announced. Beware, by default the photos are taken with 12 million pixels, with the defect of an exaggerated contrast that harms the details a little. With the maximum resolution, however, there is nothing to complain about, it is precise, detailed and the rendering remains natural, which is a very good thing. Beware, in the dark, the rendering is very affected by a night mode that treats the images too much, and the same goes for "normal" mode, with a too marked smoothing, and therefore not very natural. The ultra-wide-angle module is rather disappointing, because the captured images suffer from several defects, between overexposure and smoothing, with defects in the periphery. But good surprise: the rendering in low light is very honorable. The 3x optical zoom has some difficulties because of a marked blur, because of a not very subtle smoothing. At night, the defects are logically accentuated. On the positive side, there is the front sensor which, with its 40 million pixels provides very nice selfies, with a good management of the background, which is also found in portraits. Video capture is done in perfect conditions, in all circumstances and with all sensors.
