OnePlus 12

OnePlus avoids overkill with its range of smartphones, which is fairly small in number and therefore easy to find one's way around. The OnePlus 12 is the manufacturer's most advanced model, with many qualities to boast about.

The first impression is a little disconcerting, as the OnePlus 12 is a very heavy smartphone (220 grams on the scales) and its dimensions are imposing. It has a very large screen, fortunately with very thin edges, and a very effective fingerprint sensor just below the slab. Build quality is beyond reproach, and the rear panel is virtually fingerprint-proof. While on-board connectivity and technology are all up to date, the IP65 certification, which does not guarantee waterproofing, is a minor regret, as it is often found on competitors' products.

A generous screen size goes hand in hand with a high resolution, and with 1440 by 3168 pixels, OnePlus has gone for the big picture, offering comfortable reading on a daily basis. Fluidity is also the order of the day, with refresh rates ranging from 1 to 120 Hz depending on the situation, and contrast is infinite, which is appreciated for deep blacks. If reflections are noticeable, the brightness allows you to cope with them and enjoy this slab without fear of the sun in particular. With a little tweaking of the settings, you can enjoy faithful color rendering, but the competition offers some slightly better calibrated slabs.

The OnePlus 12 has no worries about power, handling multitasking very well and switching from one application to another without a moment's hesitation. On the other hand, when it comes to gaming, we feel that the smartphone could perhaps do better, be faster or more fluid, but that's the price we pay for sparing the battery, and therefore for the device's endurance.

In terms of photography, OnePlus has decided to move upmarket, partnering with Hasselblad, a cult brand for photo enthusiasts, and the smartphone offers three different and obviously complementary lenses. The basic wide-angle sensor captures with 12.5 million pixels, and does very well overall, with good exposure and realistic colors, but the software processing is a little too pronounced and distorts the precision of the sharpness. The same qualities, and the same little shortcomings, can be found when there's not enough light to take images. The 50-megapixel mode doesn't add much to shots, even if it does come in handy for cropping. As for the telephoto lens on the OnePlus 12, it does rather well for daytime shots, rendering detail and detail, and on the slightly negative side, a little too much smoothing. This is even more noticeable, and therefore annoying, for shots taken in fading light. With 48 million pixels on the counter, the ultra-wide-angle module promises, and at first seduces, despite a somewhat severe cropping: there are well-rendered colors, and details are there, right up to the moment you move away from the center of the image. A darker environment, however, greatly affects the image, which is heavily degraded and far less flattering. As for the rest, there's little or nothing to complain about: portrait mode performs well, and selfies don't suffer too much from smoothing, and they remain precise. Video capture suffers no notable problems.

The increase in battery size has very positive effects, and the brand's fine optimization work means that you can go beyond a day's use without worrying about battery levels. What's more, rapid recharging is also available, with the charger supplied with the smartphone, which is as rare as it is appreciable.
