Our opinion
Nothing has carved out a niche for itself among smartphone manufacturers, notably by focusing on unique design and attractive value for money, in addition to a fairly consistent range. The Nothing Phone (3a) has more than one string to its bow.
The first thing that stands out about this smartphone is Nothing's unique design, with its transparent back panel and LEDs around the camera module, which is slightly larger than on the Phone (2a). Although it's a fairly large smartphone, the Nothing Phone (3a) feels good in the hand with well-placed physical buttons, except for the new one that acts as a screenshot trigger, for example, which can be confused with the power button. The LEDs and their notification function are still effective and unique. Well-finished, with quality materials, this smartphone suffers from a lack of waterproofing and eSIM standard: otherwise, it is complete.
The screen of this Nothing Phone (3a) is a success. Its 6.78-inch diagonal goes with a resolution of 2372 by 1080 pixels, for good viewing comfort. Although the refresh rate goes up to 120 Hz, it is not adaptive. The brightness is strong enough for most outdoor situations, even if it does not prevent glare. With a quick trip to the settings, you can enjoy accurate color rendering.
In terms of power, this smartphone has plenty under the hood and handles everyday use with ease and fluidity. The Nothing Phone (3a) also performs very well in gaming, which is handled rather well and is enjoyable, without making any major concessions in terms of display.
There is a trio of camera lenses on the back of the Nothing Phone (3a). The main wide-angle lens has 50 million pixels and performs more than well in terms of rendering, with pleasant details and colorimetry, which unfortunately deteriorate when the scene captured is darker. There is some digital noise and an orange haze, which contribute to degrading the overall rendering, but it is still usable. The ultra-wide-angle module has been reduced to only 8 megapixels instead of 50, but performs well in daylight, even if there is a slight lack of detail and contrast. Nothing too annoying, but unsurprisingly, darkness makes the photos difficult to use, even if the competition doesn't always do any better. For the zoom, there is a 2x telephoto lens that offers surprisingly good quality, even if some details seem exaggerated in the photos. This very positive observation applies to daytime photos, but the darkness doesn't make the shots too disappointing, which is a real pleasant surprise.
As for the rest, the front module takes decent selfies, but beware of the fairly pronounced smoothing. The portrait mode sometimes struggles with hair, particularly beards and hair. The main sensor is sufficient for video, with more than acceptable results.
The battery life of the Nothing Phone (3a) is good, with almost two days of use before you need to recharge the phone, which is very impressive. Charging takes about an hour with the right charger.
