Nothing continues to subtly distill off-the-beaten-track smartphones, allowing the brand to stand out in an often homogeneous production. The promised focus of this Nothing Phone (2a) is value for money: what does it deliver?
Once again, the design is a real eye-catcher, retaining the distinctive look of the brand's smartphones, with its transparency revealing the inner workings of the device and the LEDs used to indicate notifications. The positioning of the photo sensors has been well executed, almost giving the impression of a robot's head. While plastic is the order of the day, this benefits the smartphone's weight, which is well under 200 grams. The grip is generally satisfactory, even if the Nothing Phone's dimensions (2a) remain generous. While the connectivity is quite complete, we regret the absence of the IP68 standard that guarantees waterproofing, even if this smartphone is not afraid of a light splash.
The Nothing Phone (2a)'s elongated, imposing slab (6.7" diagonal) boasts a resolution of 2412 by 1084 pixels, enough to avoid eye fatigue after prolonged reading. Nothing has succeeded in calibrating the colorimetry of this screen, which is precise and fairly realistic. Brightness is within a good range, always adequate whatever the environment, very dark or very bright. Finally, the absence of afterglow and infinite contrast are always appreciable.
The phone clearly responds in terms of power, and never slows down in the most conventional uses. There is a slight drop in performance when launching the latest video games, but this remains perfectly acceptable.
This Nothing Phone (2a) doesn't go overboard in terms of photography, using just two sensors to capture shots. The main sensor, which can reach up to 50 million pixels, performs very well, with satisfactory contrast and controlled colorimetry, but smoothing is sometimes too noticeable. This does nothing to reduce the digital noise caused by a loss of light in the scene immortalized, but the final rendering remains usable. While by default, shots are taken at 12.5 megapixels, the switch to full resolution doesn't bring much, just the possibility of cropping. The ultra-wide-angle sensor, on the other hand, lags behind and doesn't offer good shots, with very mediocre sharpness and persistent blur, which gets even worse in the dark. The good points are the sensor for selfies - very well made - and the portrait mode, which is quite effective. Video capture is also a success.
Without particularly shining in terms of battery capacity, this smartphone performs well and can handle a day's unrestricted use without a hitch. With the right charger - alas, not included - the Nothing Phone (2a) recharges very quickly, so you can get going again without too much delay.
