Our opinion
Nothing's first smartphone was a pleasant surprise and a real success, but with this second iteration, the manufacturer intends to confirm this initial success by moving upmarket.
The design of this new Nothing smartphone follows the original codes of the first model, with a transparent back and a whole array of LEDs serving as indicator lights, notably for notifications and the like. The slightly rounded overall shape is pleasant to grip, and fingers can easily find the various physical keys, but the Nothing Phone (2) remains imposing and rather heavy. While the slab is solid, the absence of any waterproofing is regrettable, but as far as connectivity is concerned, there's nothing to complain about.
This Nothing phone (2) features a large slab, with a diagonal of 6.7 inches. Definition is high enough to offer good legibility (2414 by 1080 pixels), and the refresh rate can go up to 120 Hz like the top-of-the-range models. Brightness is excellent, but you'll have to be careful in bright sunlight, as the smartphone suffers from fairly pronounced reflections. A quick pass through the settings finally results in very realistic and pleasant color rendering.
Clearly, the Nothing Phone (2) is not lacking in power, and its processor delivers excellent fluidity in all day-to-day use, allowing you to launch numerous applications without having to worry about putting too much strain on the device. It could, however, do a little better when it comes to the gaming experience, and we're occasionally confronted with minor slowdowns.
There's no plethora of photo sensors, since the Nothing Phone (2) only offers a main one and an ultra-wide-angle module. The main sensor offers good shots with 50 million pixels, despite a slight tendency towards overexposure. On the other hand, it struggles when the light fades, and shots are affected by strong smoothing and red haze. The ultra-wide-angle module comes through with flying colors, and despite slight overexposure, delivers richly detailed, high-contrast images. Surprisingly, photo quality suffers only slightly when the light fades! Although the Nothing Phone (2) front module boasts 32 megapixels, it tends to render images a little too smoothly, and may struggle to capture some faces. Video capture is excellent, with nothing to complain about.
This Nothing Phone (2) has no reason to be ashamed of its autonomy, thanks to a generous battery that ensures a decent range, exceeding one day without restrictions. While it is possible to benefit from rapid recharging, this requires the appropriate 45W charger.
