In the space of just a few years, the Pixel range of smartphones has managed to make Google a must-have for its smartphones, all with a range that's small in size, but still high in quality. The Pixel 9 aims to bring Google's device up to date, with great promise as always.
The Pixel 9's design has evolved slightly from the firm's usual canons, with straight edges and a slightly revised rear camera block, for a fairly identifiable whole. The choice of metal and glass as materials has a slight impact on weight, but nothing to worry about, and the dimensions of this Pixel 9 remain reasonable. The screen has rather slim edges and a fingerprint reader that's very quick and efficient. The on-board connectors are all recent and guarantee a certain longevity, and last but not least, the smartphone is IP68 certified to resist water and dust (to a certain extent).
The Pixel 9's 6.3-inch diagonal screen is a success. With a resolution of 1080 by 2424 pixels, it's easy to read without tiring the eyes, and the refresh rate of between 60 Hz and 120 Hz ensures fluidity, and therefore comfort. However, you'll need to opt for the natural mode to enjoy faithful color reproduction, even if some of the competition's slabs do better. The very high brightness of this Pixel 9 is a strong point, especially in the brightest environments, and a guarantee of being able to read what's on the screen without too many worries.
To power this smartphone, Google is once again relying on its in-house processor, here in its fourth version, designed above all for artificial intelligence and classic uses, in which it works wonders. The result is perfect fluidity and seamless switching from one application to another. When it comes to gaming, the Pixel 9 is a little less consistent, as it tends to heat up, resulting in a drop in performance: nothing serious, but it's a little surprising in use.
The Pixel 9 is equipped with two photo sensors, which are eagerly awaited given the reputation of Google's devices in this area. The main module, with its fifty million pixels, does not disappoint. There's no shortage of detail in the photos, colors are faithful and there's a well-marked sharpness, with a nice overall balance. This flattering overall picture also holds up when the light fades, with fine detail and controlled exposure. Google has focused its efforts on improving the ultra-wide-angle module, which avoids all the usual shortcomings of this kind of lens. Once again, fine detail and contrast are mastered, resulting in a highly satisfactory rendering. Darkness, on the other hand, affects the quality of shots, but within reasonable proportions. Portrait mode proves effective in all circumstances, with very good cropping. The front-mounted sensor allows for beautifully crafted self-portraits, and video capture is flawless.
Google has made great strides in terms of autonomy, with this Pixel 9 lasting a full day without failing, and even longer, thanks to its new processor that puts less strain on the battery. However, the absence of fast charging means that you'll have to be patient to get your smartphone back to 100%.
