Our opinion
After having marked the minds with the Pixel 3, which had largely seduced in the high-end with a high photo quality, Google releases a new version of its smartphone, a fourth iteration that once again promises a good price-quality ratio.
There is a small progress in design, but Google has still not reached the standards of the competition on this point, with edges a little too marked. In particular, there is this facial recognition system and therefore a prominent camera to unlock the device, which has the merit of being effective (except for a hat or other accessory), or even too much sometimes. This is due to a system that detects movements in front of the device, which can also be used to change songs in a media player. The side borders are always there to activate a shortcut to the Google Assistant, but unfortunately this cannot be changed. Perfectly finished, of reasonable dimensions, the Google Pixel 4 is also waterproof thanks to an IP68 certification.
For the display, Google trusts a slab of the correct size but not huge as is often the case nowadays. The 5.7-inch diagonal goes hand in hand with a good resolution, the 2280 by 1080 pixels is sufficient for an unobtrusive reading. The contrast is infinite, thanks to OLED technology, but the brightness is only just in the norm, this concern being compensated by an absence or almost absence of reflections, which is very positive. For colors and their rendering, Google once again makes a perfect match and gives its screen colors that are both bright and realistic, without any aberration.
For sound, Google is as petty as Apple and does not provide a USB-C adapter for its old headset, which at this price level is a little disappointing. The speakers, on the other hand, are quite correct and will give the change without any problems, despite some difficult frequencies.
The power is there, and the Google Pixel 4 is impossible to make it fail, even to solicit it excessively or not far away. Fluidity is essential and fun exercise is not a problem either, as the details certainly don't make this overpowering smartphone fail.
As on the previous model, the quality of the photo part is impressive. The Google Pixel 4 is not overbidding, with two photo sensors. Unfortunately, it is a zoom that is found next to the main sensor, while the digital zoom on the Pixel 3 worked very well: a wide angle would have been more appropriate. However, the quality is there, and the main sensor with its 12 million pixels does a remarkable job, with precise, detailed and homogeneous photos. In the dark, Google is strong and offers very precise images, once again homogeneous, with even a stunning night mode. The only small criticism may be that the images are a little cold, but nothing prohibitive. The telephoto lens module has nothing to be ashamed of and does particularly well in good conditions, without weakening significantly in a dark environment. The portrait mode is excellent and shines with its precision. For selfies, the onboard sensor lacks a little detail and precision, but manages the exposure well. The video recording is of high quality but the competition often does better in terms of fluidity.
For the battery, Google has reduced the capacity and this does not require a shorter period of use. Nevertheless, the Pixel 4 is clearly not one of the most durable and it is rare to be able to exceed one and a half days of use before having to recharge it, which is less than what can be expected from a high-end product.
