Our opinion
Google has not yet succeeded in establishing itself as a major smartphone manufacturer, but the company intends to change this with its new iteration of the Pixel, and this Pixel 3 XL model has many qualities to promote, which is essential given the density of competition represented byApple,Samsung or Huawei.
Large format version of thePixel 3, it features the main aesthetic codes, such as the back coating in two materials (gloss and matt), which avoids most fingerprints, while being very pleasant under the fingers. Immense in the hand, the device has a notch on its screen, the edges of which have been reduced considerably, and are sensitive for example to launch the Google assistant. However, only the fingerprint reader is available to unlock the device, which can be frustrating given its position on the back of the Pixel 3 XL. Another small criticism is the absence of a port for micro-SD cards, and the support of eSim still unavailable in France, which results in the simple presence of a port for Sim.
The 6.3-inch screen is well equipped in terms of resolution, with 2960 by 1440 pixels for pixels of flawless finesse. If the brightness is a little lower, the reflections are on the other hand very well controlled, and the infinite contrast completes to make this slab a success. This is confirmed by the high fidelity of the rendering, with very accurate and natural colors at the same time.
The sound to the headset will go through Bluetooth or an adapter for the USB-c port, which is quite satisfactory in its reproduction. The two loudspeakers, without being perfect, remain at the top of the basket with a correct stereo that only deteriorates at full speed.
The Pixel 3 XL is like all top-of-the-range models impossible to fault: it never slows down, moves from one application to another without ever showing a hitch. Needless to say, the games are very comfortable on this very powerful smartphone, but never overheated.
For the photo, Google made a strong choice, with a single sensor of 12 million pixels. Bold, this bet pays off with a very high quality rendering. In full brightness, the shots are clean, detailed and balanced, and captured with remarkable speed. In the dark, and even if the Night Sight mode is not yet in place, the results are very satisfactory with a well-controlled noise to produce natural, not too smooth photos. Even the digital zoom is a nice success, and only the portrait mode and its slightly artificial rendering are slightly disappointing. For video, the Pixel 3 XL allows very high definition without any problems. Finally, for selfies, this time there are two sensors, which do a great job together.
You really have to ask a lot of the Pixel 3 XL to exhaust it before two full days of use : this is due in large part to an excellent optimization work on the part of Google.
