Asus is well known to high-tech enthusiasts, who know that the Taiwanese brand never skimp on certain quality standards. This Asus Zenfone 11 Ultra slips naturally into the brand's product range, and promises great performance.
Unfortunately, it soon becomes clear that Asus's decision to make Zenfone smartphones of moderate size has come to an end. This is a very imposing device in the hands, with a very large screen, admittedly well optimized, but which goes hand in hand with very generous dimensions, which will surprise those accustomed to the range, not to mention the more than noticeable weight. It is nevertheless very well finished, even if we can regret a tendency for the terminal to slip out of the hands with a very smooth back coating. Asus could have done a better job with its slightly protruding photo block, but on the plus side, there are the on-board technologies, all state-of-the-art (including the latest Wifi standard, Wifi 7), and something as surprising as it is welcome, a Jack port! This audio output, which will enable you to use old headphones, is also very well made.
With such a generous diagonal - 6.78 inches - you need a generous resolution, and the 1080 by 2400 pixels prove sufficient for a good display finesse. What's really positive is the adaptive refresh rate, which can be set from 1 to 120 Hz, with a peak that can go as high as 144 Hz. After a quick look at the settings, color rendering is also very good, even if some of our competitors' smartphones do better, without it being very noticeable to the naked eye. Luminosity is very well managed, making it possible to cope with any environment.
The Zenfone 11 Ultra is clearly powerful enough to deliver a constantly fluid everyday experience, as well as gaming sessions with maximum detail and no slowdowns. And it's worth noting that the terminal doesn't heat up too much.
As far as photography is concerned, Asus has opted for three complementary modules: a telephoto lens and an ultra-wide-angle module to support the main module. The latter can capture up to 50 million pixels, but has a disappointing tendency to overexpose, resulting in slightly washed-out, unflattering images. This is a pity, as details are very much in evidence. In more difficult lighting conditions, colors are better, but details suffer from pronounced smoothing.
The 50-megapixel mode allows cropping, but still suffers from a few shortcomings. The ultra-wide-angle module, on the other hand, struggles with blur as soon as you zoom in a little, and when the light fades, it's even worse. Noise and color are too pronounced to keep the shot usable. Finally, the telephoto lens also struggles, with little flaws in the shot that you can't help but notice, and which are disappointing in the end. Surprisingly, these flaws are not as pronounced on a photo taken in the dark. On the plus side, the camera's image capture is beautifully crafted, with everything needed to attenuate any camera shake. The portrait mode and front-facing lens make for attractive selfies.
A bigger smartphone means a bigger battery, and the Zenfone 11 Ultra takes advantage of this to deliver long battery life. What's more, fast charging is also available, allowing you to fill up in less than an hour.
