Our opinion
The short range of smartphones from Asus has the merit of being clear to understand, and this ROG Phone 9 Pro is aimed primarily at gamers, with a configuration particularly optimized for them.
The ROG Phone 9 Pro is not a small-format or lightweight smartphone. In fact, it's quite heavy, and the screen and overall dimensions are imposing, as is the camera section at the rear of the device. Yet the whole thing exudes solidity, it's well finished, waterproof (IP68 standard) and the connectivity is very complete, even offering a mini-jack port for old headphones and no less than two USB-C ports! It's a shame, however, that eSIMs are not supported. There are physical buttons on the right-hand edge of the smartphone, for gaming, including on the back of the phone, where the small LEDs enable a few playful uses, in addition to notifications.
As for the screen, it has a generous diagonal of 6.78 inches, with a decent resolution of 2400 by 1080 pixels. Its most impressive feature, however, is the refresh rate, which can go up to 185 Hz for games, although in reality very few games allow this. Nonetheless, fluidity is absolutely top-notch. As for the rest, brightness is pretty good, even if in the dark the ROG Phone 9 Pro remains a little too bright. Contrast and afterglow are fine, and with a little fine-tuning, colors are rendered with precision.
As for performance, Asus keeps its promises with this ROG Phone 9 Pro. Obviously, it has no trouble absorbing all demands, with multitasking that never puts it in difficulty. But it's the gaming experience that sets the device apart, proving ultra-high-performance and, above all, stability in hyper-demanding fluidity conditions. There's absolutely nothing to complain about, especially as Asus has managed the almost imperceptible heating to perfection.
The Asus ROG Phone 9 Pro features 3 photo sensors. The most conventional module, with its fifty million pixels, produces 12.5-megapixel images by combining them. Rendering is decent, but there are still a few problems around the edges and sharpness isn't perfect, which doesn't prevent correct colorimetry and controlled exposure. In difficult lighting conditions, however, photos deteriorate quickly. The fifty million pixels are mainly used for cropping. The ultra-wide-angle module, on the other hand, has its work cut out for it, and suffers from a number of faults, even if the shots are still usable. The same cannot be said when the light is fading. The telephoto lens, while it has the merit of being offered, is not really convincing, and suffers from a number of minor flaws in its rendering. For selfies, the high definition of the front sensor does not prevent excessive smoothing, while portrait mode suffers from unsubtle cropping. Video capture, on the other hand, is of good quality.
In terms of autonomy, this smartphone fares very well, with a generous battery and a latest-generation processor. Beware, however, that the ROG Phone 9 Pro's resource-hungry gaming will drain it much more quickly. A very good point is that this Pro version of the smartphone is sold with a hyper-powerful charger, for the fastest possible recharging.
