Our opinion
It's been a few years since Apple released a smaller, more economical version of its iconic smartphone. Apple is aiming for this sometimes elusive balance with the iPhone 16e.
The design of the iPhone 16e borrows from other Apple models. Compact, it's the size of the iPhone 14 and easy to handle, being quite light too. Made from fine materials, it is beautifully finished and its ergonomics are well thought-out, with the return of the Action key. While the presence of a pronounced notch on the front is regrettable, it is otherwise complete in terms of connectivity, albeit without WiFi 7 support. It's also waterproof, with IP68 certification.
The 6.1-inch iPhone 16e's display is a success. Well-defined (2532 by 1170 pixels), it offers a good level of display finesse and therefore reading comfort, but its refresh rate blocked at 60Hz is a minor disappointment, and frustrating when you've tried a higher fluidity. Brightness also falls a little short of expectations, and can be a problem in brightly lit environments. Screen calibration is very good, and colors are faithfully rendered.
Once again, Apple combines a very powerful chip with top-notch software optimization. Fluidity is therefore perfect for multitasking and traditional uses, and the same applies to the gaming experience: a slight heating is sometimes felt, but nothing serious.
When it comes to photography, Apple has cut corners with a single 48-megapixel sensor, which takes 24-megapixel photos as standard. This sensor performs very well in daylight conditions, with detail, sharpness and clarity. The minor complaint may be that the colors are a little too accentuated. If you capture a darker scene, you have to deal with noise and a slightly dull overall appearance. The 48 megapixel mode is useful for zooming or cropping.
For selfies, the iPhone 16e's sensor is very classic and effective, with numerous portrait modes. Video capture is good, but doesn't offer as many refinements as the classic iPhone 16, but that's not something many people will miss.
In terms of battery life, this iPhone 16e holds up very well, and you don't have to worry about recharging it before 1 day's use, unless you're doing a lot of gaming. On the other hand, recharging takes a long time by today's standards.
