Our opinion
Like every year, Apple delivers the ultimate version of its iPhone, adding to the functionality and power of the Pro model an even larger size than the Plus model.
So it's a big smartphone we're holding in our hands, very big indeed, with all Apple's standards in terms of finish, with beautiful materials (titanium, very solid glass), all with thin edges to limit the size of the device as much as possible. It's also quite heavy, but still easy to handle. The physical button for controlling the camera is also present, but it's not easy to say whether it's superfluous or very pleasant. However, it's not at all annoying. The photo sensors are clearly visible on the rear panel, and as far as on-board connectivity and technology are concerned, everything is up to date and in line with the expectations of such a smartphone.
As for the iPhone 16 Pro Max's screen, it's a very large 6.9-inch panel with a high resolution - 1320 by 2868 pixels, a guarantee of real display finesse. With a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, fluidity is also the order of the day. There's no need to set any parameters on this screen, as it's very well adjusted from the outset, and displays colors that are very faithful, both in terms of temperature and overall balance. Brightness is always ideal, adapting to both bright and dark environments.
In terms of power, Apple has come up trumps with the most advanced version of its processor, which combines great power with superb optimization. Needless to say, applications always run smoothly, whatever the circumstances, and games run in optimal conditions. One good point is that the iPhone 16 Pro Max heats up very reasonably, so it never becomes uncomfortable. However, we'll have to wait for the arrival of Apple Intelligence (AI) to see how this smartphone handles this new type of use.
For photography, Apple has opted for the same configuration as the iPhone Pro, with three sensors to cover all the uses expected of such a smartphone. The main 48-megapixel sensor captures a great deal of detail, with good sharpness and contrast, but overall rendering deteriorates slightly at the edges of the image. When the light fades, however, rendering remains respectable. The ultra-wide-angle module is also of excellent quality, with 48 million pixels and a rendering that takes full advantage of this, enabling quality shots that don't suffer too much from fading light. For telephoto shots, the iPhone 16 Pro Max uses the same sensor as the 15 version, and shots are very accurate in color and rich in detail.
The portrait mode, with its artistic filters, is a success, and the front-facing sensor enables high-quality selfies with 12 million pixels. Video capture is top-notch, with a plethora of options and the possibility of editing at up to 120 fps, all in 4K, for beautiful slow-motion shots. As with all iPhone 16 models, the soundtrack is audio-cleaned, and all with real efficiency.
In terms of autonomy, Apple has opted for a large battery, which gives this top-of-the-range smartphone excellent endurance. It's possible to enjoy almost two days of unrestricted use, but the downside is that charging is still not very fast.
