Our opinion
Like every year, the new iteration of Apple's flagship model is eagerly awaited, and even if the Apple Intelligence AI isn't immediately available in France, it's still a top-notch smartphone.
The design of this iPhone 16 varies little or not at all from the version 15, with the same size and weight, and of course the same quality of finish, with the only notable difference at first glance being a different arrangement of the rear camera lenses. But what's particularly noteworthy is the appearance of two new physical buttons, one customizable to toggle between ringer and silencer in its original configuration, and another to control the camera. This will take some getting used to, depending on the user.
The iPhone 16's 6.1” diagonal screen is once again very well calibrated by Apple, with color rendering very faithful to reality. There's also nothing to complain about in terms of brightness, which is always appropriate whatever the environment in which the device is used, or the resolution, 1179 by 2556 pixels, which offers good reading comfort. The only weak point is the panel's refresh rate, which caps out at 60 Hz, a far cry from the 120 Hz standards that offer greater fluidity to the eye.
Power is obviously very much in evidence on this iPhone 16, which may not have Apple's latest processor, but is nonetheless extremely convincing. It performs all the tasks required without fail, and is always a top performer during gaming sessions.
The photo configuration uses two sensors, one wide-angle and the other ultra-wide-angle. The main 48-megapixel sensor delivers beautiful shots, with sharpness and realistic colors, and the dynamic range of the scene photographed is well respected. This is also true when the scene is darker, for a very convincing result. The ultra-wide-angle module still has a ceiling of 12 million pixels, but now captures a little more light. The overall rendering is very good, but the processing is a little aggressive and this is paid for by a little electronic noise. The good surprise is that the quality is still correct when the scene photographed is darker.
For selfies, there's nothing to worry about: this iPhone handles them wonderfully, and also offers an excellent, highly accurate portrait mode, with the added “styles” feature to give your shots an artistic touch. Video capture is as excellent as ever, and it's a pleasant surprise that sound processing is possible after the fact, and proves to be terribly effective.
A great leap forward in terms of autonomy for this iPhone 16, which is far more enduring than its predecessor, with the milestone of an intense day passed without a hitch. Recharging is not very fast, but wireless recharging is faster than before.
