Our opinion
Apple does like the competition and offers a Max version to its smartphone of the very high-end. As the iPhone XS Max, it intends to establish itself as an excellent device in all circumstances and for all uses.
The iPhone 11 Pro Max has a huge side when you take it in hand, which is impossible or almost impossible with only one hand because the device is imposing. The design has not evolved and we still have to deal with rather imposing edges, with also a generous notch in the front. This one is not totally useless because it houses a camera that allows the Face Id, the facial recognition system used to unlock the smartphone being very effective, even the best on the market. There is nothing to complain about, however, the finishes, of a rare quality, with a matt finish on the back that is very attractive. What is less so is certainly the photo part, and the three lenses in an area that creates an awkward protuberance. If there is still no (more) Jack or USB-c port or Micro-SD card slot, the iPhone 11 Pro Max is waterproof, which is always great.
The screen of this iPhone is a little larger than that of the Pro model, with a 6.5 inch diagonal, but this has not been at the expense of quality. It is indeed an irreproachable display, with a definition largely sufficient to remain in front of the screen without embarrassment. The contrast is more than perfect and the brightness always ideal, in all situations, without leaving too much room for reflections. Respect for colors is something to which Apple is committed, and the excellence of this screen is verified by always accurate colors, with true temperature, and everything adapts without concern to the ambient brightness.
For the sound, if the disappearance of the jack for old headphones has been heard for a long time, the absence of an adapter for the Lightning port is still as mean and disappointing. On the other hand, the speakers are very good and there is nothing unpleasant about using them to watch a series or even listen to some music, the rendering being faithful.
The performances are of very high quality. It goes without saying that the iPhone 11 Pro Max has no difficulty in executing what is requested, without noticeable slowdowns and even after intensive and prolonged use. The games do not suffer from any slowdown and can be enjoyed with the great luxury of detail.
With three sensors, Apple opts for a classic configuration: a main sensor with 12 million pixels, a second one for the wide angle and finally an optical zoom. The first is irreproachable, there is nothing wrong with the photos it produces, because the rendering is realistic and rich in detail, with however a small problem in the edges of the image, but which will escape most users. In low light, iPhone 11 has a night mode that does its job well and allows you to enjoy images with a well-managed smoothing. The results are just affected when the darkness is very dark, and again. The wide-angle module manages the whole image quite well, and even the edges remain readable, although this is often a weak point for this type of lens. The details are well marked, obviously in a bright environment, because the darkness strongly affects the images, which do not however suffer too much from smoothing. When zooming, however, the iPhone 11 Pro is barely noticeable, with details that are well affected, too affected by noise, and this gets worse when the darkness is marked. For the rest, the portrait mode is a real success because it recognizes faces very well and restores the smallest details. For video, the iPhone 11 Pro Max excels, with a very high resolution that does not require any fluidity. Finally, the selfies are very successful, but we would have hoped the same success for the portraits as with the main sensor, but the quality really doesn't have to blush.
When it comes to autonomy, Apple is really doing better and offers up to two days of autonomy, all without having to make any significant compromises. So there's nothing to worry about when you go for a ride, the iPhone 11 Pro Max has endurance to spare.
